A In general the following word-types are
feminine (la, une):
1 ending in té
ex. la bonté, la propriété...
2 ending in sion, tion
ex.:la situation, la pollution, la version...
3 ending in ance and ence
la croyance, la surveillance, la patience, l'indulgence...
4 ending in eur
la chaleur, la peur.. exception: le
bonheur
5 ending in eille
ex. la bouteille, l'oreille
6. ending in ve
l'épreuve ...
7 ending in ure
la voiture, la toiture...
8 ending in ence or ance
l'importance, l'indifference...
9 ending in son
la raison, la trahison...
10 ending in ole
la parole...
11 ending in ale
la cathèdrale...
B In general the following types of nouns are masculine (le, un):
1. ending in sme
l'enthousiasme, l'impressionnisme...
2 ending in eau
le bateau, le troupeau... exception: la peau
3 ending in ail or eil
le travail, le bétail, l'accueil...
4 ending in ment or ien
le soutien, le maintien,le scintillement...
Keep in mind that there are exceptions. For words that do not fall in these categories the gender has to be memorized.
Study these types of nouns, find others words to add to each category. Keep these examples in your notes.
